Project - Bank Stabilization Projects

1. Project Outline

Because run off is so significant n our watershed we see enormous swings in river flow levels with rain and snow melt events. During run off events the river can increase in depth from about 4 feet deep to almost 15 feet deep (lower river) and back to four feet deep or less in 12 hours after it stops raining. See Rainharvesting project. One of the goals of the rainharvesting project is to reduce these very dramatic hydrometric swings by storing water on the landscape. The main focus here s to enhance, re-create and create wetlands and storage ponds throughout the watershed.

When the river comes up, even with reletively minor rain events, the river banks erode. In several areas we have significant soil loss that covers over viable habitat gravel while eroding properties with established housing and infrastructure (water mains, Hydro poles, barns and outbuildings, etc) being threatened.

Some erosion is normal but in some locations we have serious effects that are harming habitat, threatening established infrastructure and creating public safety issues.

We have successfully utilized modern Rock Groyne technology and are currently designing treatments for two of the most serious locations. See January 2009 Update Bulletin.
